An ornate 7 room butlers indicator box professionally restored and fully tested, in 100% working order. The original makers signed in gold leaf to the bottom reads "H.DALE & Co. - 26 LUDGATE HILL- LONDON".

Some quick research on the company (see below) revealed that this box was made between 1888 and 1890 when they changed name and moved premises. The address is currently occupied by the Côte Brasserie company.

Company Name
H. Dale & Co. 1888 - 1890
H & E.J. Dale 1882 - 1888
Company Address
26 Ludgate Hill, London EC 1882 - 1890
4 Little Britain, London - c. 1887
9 Kirby St., London - c. 1889
H & E.J. Dale carried on the business of F.J. Cox at the old address of 26 Ludgate Hill, the BJA advertisement for 1884 says the business is managed by C.D. Smith and that they have their own works, probably Kirby Street.
The 26 Ludgate Hill address was occupied by Price, Talbot & Co. in 1890 and then Price & Co. from 1891, both described as camera manufacturers.

This box is a little different to the usual ones. When a button in a room is pressed the corresponding silver disk flips across to alert the staff which room required assistance. There is a button on one side which when pressed resets the indicator disks. The box requires a voltage of 6.

The hardwood case is beautifully crafted with box joints and brass hinges. The gold leaf writing is all in excellent condition. The rooms consist of DINING ROOM, DRAWING ROOM and 5 BEDROOMS.

Measures:

  • 26cm (10") high
  • 59cm (23") wide
  • 7cm (2 3/4") deep

In overall fantastic condition. The black paint is stunning, as is the gold writing and actual box. The only consideration are a few very small scratches to the glass, but these are only visible under close inspection.

A wonderful statement piece to instantly add authenticity to your period interior.
